Medicine Overview of Taverin 40mg Tablet
Introduction
Taverin is an antispasmodic medicine. It is used in the treatment of menstrual pain and abdominal pain. It provides relief from pain due to smooth muscle spasm like menstrual pain, pain due to kidney stones, pain due to biliary stone and gastrointestinal colicky pain.
Taverin can be taken with or without food, but better to take it at the same time every day for better results. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you.
The most common side effects of this medicine include nausea, vomiting, and dryness in the mouth. If these bother you, or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. It may also make you feel dizzy as of low blood pressure, if happens take caution while driving.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have ever had severe heart disease or have blood pressure issues, or you have liver or kidney disease. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Your doctor may check blood pressure regularly while taking this medicine.

How to use Taverin
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Taverin may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Taverin works
Taverin is an anti-spasmodic medicine which relieves contractions (spasms) associated with smooth muscles in the abdomen.
What if you forget to take Taverin?
If you miss a dose of Taverin, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Adult: 1 to 2 tablets, 3 times daily.
Injection: Adults: 1 to 2 ampoules, intramuscularly or subcutaneously, 1-3 times daily.
For the management of acute stone colics: 1 or 2 ampoules by slow intravenous injection.
Child Dose
Oral
As an antispasmodic
Children (over 6 years): 1/2 to 1 tablet, 1-2 times daily.
40 mg 1-2 times daily
Children (1-6 years): 1/4 to 1/2 tablet, 1-2 times daily.
20 mg 1-2 times daily
Contraindication
Severe renal/hepatic/cardiac dysfunction. Porphyria.
Mode of Action
Drotaverine has antispasmodic effect mediated via inhibition of phosphodiesterase-IV, specific for smooth muscle. It has a rapid and direct action on the smooth muscle. It acts to correct cyclic AMP and Ca imbalance at the spastic site, thereby relieving smooth muscle spasm and pain.
Precaution
Exercise caution in patients with renal/hepatic/cardiac dysfunction. Pregnacy, lactation.
Side Effect
Vertigo, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth.
Interaction
May attenuate the action of levodopa. Concurrent use of analgesics, antimuscarinics or benzodiazepines. Additive beneficial effect with concurrent use of analgesics, antimuscarinics or benzodiazepines.
