Rapid Immunochromatographic Antibody Test for Tuberculosis
The Anti-TB IgM + IgG (ICT) test is a rapid immunochromatographic test used to detect IgM and IgG antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the blood. It helps in diagnosing tuberculosis (TB) infection, but it is not a confirmatory test. Additional tests like TB culture, GeneXpert, or Chest X-ray may be required for confirmation.

Overview
The Anti-TB IgM + IgG (Immunochromatographic Test, ICT) is a serological test used to detect antibodies (IgM and IgG) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis (TB). It helps in identifying recent or past TB infections, but it is not a definitive diagnostic test.
Risk Assessment
This test is mainly used for:
- Screening for TB infection, especially in high-risk individuals.
- Supplementary testing when clinical suspicion exists but other tests are inconclusive.
- Assessing past exposure to TB.
- Identifying active vs. latent TB (but with limited reliability).
Risk factors for TB include:
- Close contact with an infected person
- Weak immune system (HIV, diabetes, cancer)
- Malnutrition
- Smoking or substance abuse
- Living in crowded/unsanitary conditions
- Healthcare workers exposed to TB patients
Normal Range
- Negative result (IgM and IgG both absent) is considered normal.
- There is no standard numerical value since this is a qualitative test (Positive/Negative).
Interpretation of Results
| Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| IgM Positive, IgG Negative | Early-stage TB infection (recent exposure) |
| IgM Negative, IgG Positive | Past TB infection or latent TB |
| IgM Positive, IgG Positive | Active TB infection (ongoing) |
| IgM Negative, IgG Negative | No TB infection or very early stage |
False positives may occur in conditions like leprosy, atypical mycobacteria, or autoimmune diseases.
False negatives may occur in early TB, immunocompromised patients, or improper sample handling.
Sample Type: Blood Sample (Serum or Plasma)
- Collection Method: Venipuncture (from a vein)
- Test Type: Rapid immunochromatographic assay
