Description

This assay is indicated in situations where there is a clinical suspicion of hemophilia A diagnosis, but the 1-stage factor VIII (FVIII) assay result is normal. However, recent guidelines recommend this assay be performed in addition to the 1-stage assay in the initial workup of hemophilia A.

Overview

The Factor VIII test measures the level of Factor VIII, a protein essential for blood clotting. Deficiency or dysfunction of Factor VIII can lead to bleeding disorders, most notably Hemophilia A.

Risk assessment

Indications for Testing: Patients with unexplained bleeding, family history of bleeding disorders, or abnormal results in other coagulation tests.

Associated Risks:

    • Minimal risk when drawing blood, such as bruising or infection.
    • Patients with bleeding disorders may be at risk for excessive bleeding during and after the procedure.
Ranges

Normal Factor VIII levels generally range from 50% to 150% of the normal reference range.

Values can vary based on the laboratory, and age, and can be influenced by other factors like pregnancy or certain medications.

Test result interpretation

Low Factor VIII Levels: Suggestive of Hemophilia A or other bleeding disorders.

Normal Levels: May rule out Factor VIII deficiency but does not exclude other clotting factor deficiencies or disorders.

High Levels: May be seen in conditions like inflammation, pregnancy, or certain malignancies.

Sample types

Sample Required: Blood sample, typically collected in a citrated tube (commonly blue-top tube).

Preparation: The patient may need to fast or avoid certain medications before the test, as directed by their healthcare provider.
