A test to detect fibrin breakdown products in the blood.
The FDP test measures the level of fibrin degradation products in the blood. These are substances produced when the body breaks down blood clots. Elevated levels may indicate conditions like disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or other clotting disorders.

How our test process works!
Overview
The Fibrin Degradation Product (FDP) test measures the breakdown products of fibrin, a protein involved in blood clot formation. When a clot dissolves, FDPs are released into the bloodstream. This test is often used to evaluate clotting disorders, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and thrombotic conditions.
Risk Assessment & Indications
Doctors may order this test in cases of:
- Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
- Liver disease
- Excessive bleeding or clotting disorders
- Sepsis
Normal Range
- FDP Normal Range: Less than 10 µg/mL
- Values above this may indicate abnormal fibrinolysis or clotting issues. However, normal ranges can vary slightly by laboratory.
Interpretation of Results
Elevated FDP levels may indicate:
✔️ Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
✔️ Severe infections (sepsis)
✔️ Thrombosis (DVT, PE)
✔️ Liver disease
✔️ Recent major surgery, trauma, or childbirth
Low or Normal FDP levels are typically not concerning, as they suggest normal clot formation and breakdown.
Sample Type & Collection
- Sample Type: Blood (Plasma or Serum)
- Collection Tube: Citrated plasma (light blue-top tube) or serum
- Preparation: No fasting is required
