Overview

The Free PSA test measures the percentage of unbound, or free, prostate-specific antigen in the blood. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland, and elevated levels can indicate prostate conditions, including prostate cancer.

Risk assessment
The Free PSA test involves a blood draw, which is generally safe with minimal risks such as minor pain, bruising, or, rarely, infection at the puncture site.
Ranges
Normal ranges for Free PSA levels are typically between 0.1 and 4.0 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). However, specific reference ranges may vary among laboratories.
Test result interpretation

Low Free PSA levels: May indicate an increased risk of prostate cancer. However, low Free PSA levels can also occur due to other factors such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or inflammation of the prostate gland.

High Free PSA levels: Generally indicate a lower risk of prostate cancer. High Free PSA levels may suggest benign prostate conditions such as BPH or prostatitis.

Sample types
The Free PSA test requires a blood sample, typically collected from a vein in the arm using a needle. The sample is then processed in a laboratory to measure Free PSA levels.
