Easy 5 Minute or Rich Creme

The Easy 5 Minute line is a shampoo-type colour in a small sachet, applied and rinsed quickly, and is the one for covering grey between fuller applications. Rich Creme is a cream colour that is mixed and left on longer.

A shorter processing time generally means a shorter-lasting result. Neither line is a permanent colour, which matters if you are hoping to lighten rather than to darken — these cannot lift hair lighter than it already is.

Reading the shade numbers

Where a number appears, the digit before the point is the depth — how dark — and the digits after it describe the tone. 4.00 is a plain medium brown; 4.16 is the same depth with a red-violet tone, which is what makes it burgundy.

Hair Colour — The Patch Test

The most important paragraph in this section, and the step most often skipped.

Most hair colours contain para-phenylenediamine or a close relative, and a small number of people react to it severely. The reaction can appear the first time or after years of uneventful use, which is why the test is repeated rather than done once.

How to do it

Mix a small amount as the leaflet directs, dab it behind an ear or inside an elbow, leave it uncovered and check it two days later. Redness, itching, swelling or blistering means do not use the product.
