Ceylon Naturals Coconut Products in Bangladesh

Every Ceylon Naturals item on Arogga comes off the same tree. The oil is the part most households know, and the range around it runs to coconut milk, cream, milk powder, sugar, vinegar and aminos — a cooking shelf built out of one raw material.

The grid above is where to tell the oil bottles apart, because the only thing separating them is the volume on the label. Arogga’s Ghee & Oil shelf is where the oil sits beside mustard, olive and rice bran if you are weighing one against another.

Ceylon, Ceylon Naturals and the Odd Spelling

Ceylon is the old name for Sri Lanka, and it has stayed in use as a quality mark on tea, cinnamon and coconut. So the word does double duty: it is where the oil comes from and it is the first half of the brand name.

Most people shorten it. Ceylon coconut oil, Ceylon naturals coconut oil, Ceylon organic coconut oil and the stray Cylon all land on the same bottles. The label itself reads Ceylon Naturals, and that is the name to match when you are checking a pack against a listing.

The Coconut Oil, Small Bottle to Large

The oil is listed in a short ladder of bottle sizes, all of it the same organic extra virgin oil:

Which size to start on

Virgin coconut oil tastes and smells of coconut, which not everybody wants in a curry. If you have never cooked with it, the smallest bottle settles the question for very little outlay.

Why the big bottle is not always the saving

Oil degrades once air is in the bottle. A litre opened in Dhaka in June and used a spoon at a time will taste flatter by the end than two smaller bottles would have. Buy the size you will finish in a couple of months.

What Extra Virgin Means on a Coconut Bottle

On olive oil the phrase refers to pressing method and acidity. On coconut oil it means something narrower: the oil was taken from fresh coconut flesh without heat or chemical refining.

The alternative is copra oil, pressed from flesh that has been dried in the sun or in a kiln first, then refined, bleached and deodorised. Copra oil is clear, almost odourless and cheaper to make. Virgin oil keeps the coconut smell and a faint sweetness.

Neither is wrong. They are different ingredients, and the smell is how you tell which one is in front of you.

Milk, Cream and Milk Powder

The white side of the range comes in a carton or a pouch, and the contents are not interchangeable:

Milk against cream

Cream is the thicker extraction and milk is the thinner one. A korma or a payesh that wants body takes the cream; a lighter curry or a soup takes the milk. Cream let down with water behaves roughly like milk, so the cream is the more flexible carton to keep.

Why anyone buys the powder

An opened carton has to be used within days. The powder sits in the cupboard and gets mixed a few spoons at a time, which suits a household that wants coconut in one dish a week rather than in four.

The Ones Made from Flower Sap, Not from the Nut

This is the part of the range that surprises people. Coconut sugar, coconut vinegar and coconut aminos are not made from the coconut at all. They are made from the sap tapped out of the flower stem before it ever becomes a nut.

Coconut sugar

Sap boiled down until it crystallises. It is light brown, tastes faintly of caramel and behaves in tea and in baking much as ordinary sugar does. It is still sugar, so anyone counting it should count it.

Coconut vinegar

Sap fermented twice, first to a toddy and then to vinegar. It is softer and cloudier than white vinegar and sits closer to apple cider vinegar in salad dressings and pickles. The smaller bottle is the sensible one to try it with.

Coconut aminos

Sap fermented with salt into a dark liquid used the way soy sauce is used. It is noticeably sweeter and lighter in salt than soy sauce, and it carries no wheat, which is why most people reach for it.

Why the Oil Turns Solid

Coconut oil sets at around 24°C. Dhaka spends most of the year above that and a few weeks in January below it, so the same bottle is a clear liquid in Baishakh and a white solid in Poush.

Nothing has gone wrong. It is not spoilage, not separation and not a sign of adulteration. Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes, or scoop the solid out with a dry spoon and let it melt in the pan.

The one thing worth avoiding is repeatedly melting the whole bottle on the stove. Heat it once too often and the fresh coconut smell that you paid for starts to go.

Cooking with Coconut Oil

Low and medium heat

Unrefined oils start to smoke at a lower temperature than refined ones, and virgin coconut oil is unrefined. It handles a bhuna, a stir-fry, a dalna and shallow frying comfortably. For a deep fry held hot for a long time, a refined oil copes better.

It brings its own flavour

This is the practical difference from soyabean or sunflower oil, which taste of nothing. Coconut oil tastes of coconut, which is welcome in a chingri malai curry, a Sri Lankan style sambol or a cake, and less welcome in a beef rezala. Cook one dish with it before committing to the large bottle.

Keeping an Open Bottle or Carton

Coconut products keep well unopened and much less well afterwards. A few habits do most of the work:

  • Dry spoon, every time — water introduced into oil is what starts it going rancid.
  • Cap on tight, out of the sun — a kitchen windowsill is the worst shelf in the house for oil.
  • Decant the milk and cream — once the carton is open, move what is left to a covered glass jar in the fridge and use it in a day or two.
  • Keep the powder away from steam — it clumps near a boiling pot and then never dissolves cleanly.
  • Vinegar needs nothing — it is the one bottle here that looks after itself.

Reading a Ceylon Naturals Listing

The titles follow a pattern with a couple of wrinkles in it:

  • Organic sits in every name — so it does not distinguish anything. The useful words are the ones after it.
  • The bracket appears on the oil only — Imported from Sri Lanka is written into the oil titles and left off the rest, though the whole range is imported.
  • One title has the word coconut misspelt — the aminos listing reads Cococnut. It is the same product; the typo is in the registered name and in the web address.
  • Vinegar is the only item in a pair of sizes — everything else except the oil is a single pack size, so check the volume before assuming there is a choice.

What Changes the Price

This range is imported in finished retail packs, so the figure on a listing moves with things that have nothing to do with coconuts:

  • Bottle or pack size — the largest driver, and the reason the oil spans so wide a band.
  • Shipment and exchange rate — an imported organic pack reprices between consignments rather than monthly.
  • Format — sap products and liquid cartons are priced on entirely different bases from oil, so comparing them per millilitre tells you nothing.

Per millilitre is still the right comparison inside the oil ladder, where four bottles of one identical oil sit side by side and the only question is how much of it you want.

For everything else in the range, the useful comparison is against what you would otherwise buy — the sugar against ordinary sugar, the aminos against a bottle of soy sauce. Each listing carries today’s figure.

About Ceylon Naturals

Ceylon Naturals is a Sri Lankan brand of organic coconut-based food products, named after the island’s former name. Its packs are produced in Sri Lanka and exported, and the oil listings here carry that origin in the product title itself.

The range is built entirely around the coconut palm. It covers organic extra virgin coconut oil in several bottle sizes, coconut milk and coconut cream in cartons, spray-dried coconut milk powder, and the sap-derived line of coconut sugar, coconut vinegar and coconut aminos. All of it is positioned as certified organic rather than as a conventional grocery line.

In Bangladesh the brand reaches buyers through importers supplying supermarkets, organic and specialty grocers, and online retail.

Buying Ceylon Naturals Online in Bangladesh

The grid above shows what has landed and what has not, which matters more on an imported organic line than on a locally made one.

The sap items are shelved away from the oil, so Special Ingredients and Salt & Sugar are worth opening if you came for the aminos or the sugar rather than the oil. The cartons are filed under Dairy & Desserts, and the whole range turns up again in Cooking & Baking.

Before ordering, read the volume and the format together. Coconut milk and coconut cream are both 400ml cartons and the only word separating them on the shelf is the middle one.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is organic coconut oil the same as extra virgin coconut oil?

They describe different things. Organic refers to how the coconuts were grown; extra virgin refers to the oil being pressed from fresh flesh without heat or refining. This range carries both descriptions.

2. My bottle has gone solid and white. Is it spoiled?

No. Coconut oil sets below about 24°C, so it firms up during a cool spell and melts again on a warm day. Warm the bottle gently or take out what you need with a dry spoon.

3. What is the difference between coconut milk and coconut cream?

Thickness. Cream is the richer extraction and milk the thinner one. Cream diluted with water stands in for milk, but milk cannot be thickened back into cream.

4. Can I deep fry in virgin coconut oil?

It is better suited to shallow frying and everyday stovetop cooking. Unrefined oil smokes at a lower temperature, so a long deep fry is easier on a refined oil.

5. Is coconut sugar actually made from coconuts?

From the flower sap rather than the nut. The sap is tapped, boiled down and crystallised, which is also how the vinegar and the aminos begin.
