Indication
Vaginal thrush, Vulvo-vaginal candidiasis, Fungal infection of vagina.
Adult Dose
Vag candidiasis As VT: 150 mg/day at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights.
Vaginal infection As Vaginal cream: Applied with the applicator par vaginally once or twice daily.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity. Porphyria;
Mode of Action
Econazole modifies the permeability of cell wall membrane in fungi; may interfere w/ RNA and protein synthesis, and lipid metabolism.
Precaution
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. May damage latex contraceptives.
During pregnancy: There is no information of any abnormality or adverse event in neonates while Econazole Cream / VT had been used during pregnancy.
During lactation: As the systemic absorption of Econazole Nitrate cream is extremely low after topical/vaginal use, excretion in breastmilk is likely to be negligible. So, it can be used topically/vaginally during lactation if needed.
Side Effect
Vulvar/vaginal burning; erythema; itching;
Interaction
Theoretical potential for compd metabolized by CYP3A4/2C9, oral anticoagulants eg warfarin & acenocoumarol.
