Post 50gm Glucose Blood Sugar Test
This test measures blood glucose levels two hours after consuming a 50-gram glucose solution. It is commonly used as an initial screening test for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy. If the result is elevated, further diagnostic testing such as a 100g Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is recommended.

How our test process works!
Overview:
This test evaluates how efficiently the body processes glucose after ingesting 50 grams of glucose. It is primarily used as a screening test for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy. Unlike other glucose tolerance tests, fasting is not required before this one.
Risk Assessment
-
To screen for gestational diabetes mellitus (usually done between 24–28 weeks of pregnancy)
-
To detect impaired glucose tolerance early, reducing risk for maternal and fetal complications such as:
-
Macrosomia (large baby)
-
Neonatal hypoglycemia
-
Preeclampsia
-
Future type 2 diabetes in mother
-
Normal Range (2 Hours After 50g Glucose):
| Result (mg/dL) | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) | Normal |
| 140–199 mg/dL (7.8–11.0 mmol/L) | Borderline / Impaired glucose tolerance – further testing (100g OGTT) advised |
| ≥ 200 mg/dL (≥ 11.1 mmol/L) | Suggestive of diabetes – confirm with diagnostic OGTT |
Interpretation:
-
Normal: Glucose levels return to baseline within 2 hours — normal glucose metabolism.
-
Borderline / High: Indicates possible gestational diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. A confirmatory 100g OGTT (3-hour test) is usually performed.
-
Very High: May indicate existing or overt diabetes mellitus.
Sample Type:
-
Venous blood sample (serum or plasma)
-
Collected 2 hours after drinking 50g of glucose solution.
