Description

The 2nd Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) is a medical procedure to measure the body’s ability to metabolize glucose. After fasting, a specific glucose solution is consumed, and blood samples are taken at regular intervals to monitor glucose levels. It is commonly used to diagnose diabetes or gestational diabetes.

The reports are generated by the processing machines and clinically correlated by doctors

Overview

Purpose: The GTT evaluates how effectively your body can metabolize glucose. It's particularly useful for diagnosing type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
Procedure: Typically, you'll fast overnight, have a fasting blood glucose level measured, then drink a glucose solution. Blood samples are taken at intervals after drinking the solution (commonly at 1 and 2 hours).

Risk assesment

Risk Assessment:

GTT identifies risks of:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Prediabetes
  • Gestational Diabetes (in pregnant women)
  • Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)
  • Hypoglycemia (rarely).
Normal Ranges

Normal Range (for a 2-hour GTT using a 75g glucose load):

  • Fasting: ≤ 5.6 mmol/L (100 mg/dL)
  • 1-hour: < 10 mmol/L (180 mg/dL)
  • 2-hour: < 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL).
Interpretation

Interpretation:

  • Normal: All values within the normal range.
  • Impaired Glucose Tolerance (Prediabetes): 7.8–11.0 mmol/L (140–199 mg/dL) at 2 hours.
  • Diabetes: ≥ 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) at 2 hours.
Sample Type

Sample Type:

  • Fasting and Post-load Glucose Levels: Blood samples (usually venous plasma glucose).
  • Specimen Handling: Prompt processing to prevent glycolysis (may use sodium fluoride tubes).
