Description

Four pharmacologic inhibitors (sometimes termed blockers) of IL-6 are commercially available for clinical use: tocilizumab, sarilumab, and satralizumab, which are all monoclonal antibodies directed against the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R), and siltuximab, a monoclonal antibody specific for IL-6.

Overview

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine, a type of protein involved in immune response and inflammation. It plays a key role in infection defense, inflammation, and the development of autoimmune diseases. This test measures IL-6 levels in the blood to assess inflammatory activity or monitor certain medical conditions.

Risk assessment
Sepsis, Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular diseases
Ranges
The normal range is 0– 16.4 pg/mL for IL-6. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a nonspecific inflammatory response marker. It does not diagnose any disease or disease process. Elevated IL-6 concentrations interpretation must be in the context of the patient's clinical history.
Test result interpretation

Low/Normal Levels: No significant inflammation or immune activation.

Mild Elevation: Suggests mild inflammation (e.g., chronic conditions, mild infections).

Moderate Elevation: Indicates active disease (e.g., autoimmune diseases, chronic infections).

High Levels (>100 pg/mL): Often seen in severe conditions such as sepsis, cytokine storms, or advanced cancers.

Sample types

Sample Type

  • Specimen: Venous blood sample.
  • Processing: Collected in a serum-separating tube (SST) or EDTA tube. Requires proper handling to avoid degradation.
