Description

A pregnancy test measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone in a woman's urine or blood. HCG is produced by the placenta shortly after implantation occurs, which typically happens about 6 days after fertilization. The presence of HCG in the body is a reliable indicator of pregnancy. In a pregnancy test, a positive result indicates that the level of HCG is high enough to confirm pregnancy, while a negative result means that the level of HCG is not detectable, indicating that pregnancy has not occurred or it's too early to detect. It's important to follow the instructions provided with the test kit for accurate results.

Overview
The pregnancy test detects the hormone HCG, which is produced by the placenta shortly after the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. HCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, making it a reliable marker for confirming pregnancy.
Risk assesment
A pregnancy test (HCG level test) measures the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the blood or urine. HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy. This test is crucial for confirming pregnancy and can also help in monitoring pregnancy progression and detecting potential issues.
Ranges
Normal hCG Levels

Non-Pregnant Individuals:
Non-pregnant women: < 5 mIU/mL
Men: < 2 mIU/mL
 Pregnant Women:
3 weeks: 5 - 50 mIU/mL
4 weeks:5 - 426 mIU/mL
5 weeks:18 - 7,340 mIU/mL
6 weeks:1,080 - 56,500 mIU/mL
7-8 weeks: 7,650 - 229,000 mIU/mL
9-12 weeks:25,700 - 288,000 mIU/mL
13-16 weeks:13,300 - 254,000 mIU/mL
17-24 weeks:4,060 - 165,400 mIU/mL
25-40 weeks:3,640 - 117,000 mIU/mL
Interpretation
Interpretation of hCG Levels

1. Positive Pregnancy Test:
  - If hCG levels are above 25 mIU/mL, it generally indicates pregnancy.
  - Levels between 5 and 25 mIU/mL are considered indeterminate, and a repeat test may be required after a few days to confirm pregnancy.

2. Rising hCG Levels:
  - In a typical early pregnancy, hCG levels double approximately every 48 to 72 hours.
  - Slower rise in hCG levels may indicate an ectopic pregnancy or a potential miscarriage.

3. High hCG Levels:
  - Higher than normal hCG levels can indicate multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets), molar pregnancy, or gestational trophoblastic disease.

4. Decreasing hCG Levels:
  - A decrease in hCG levels can suggest a miscarriage or fetal demise.

5. Persistent Low hCG Levels:
  - Consistently low hCG levels that do not rise adequately may indicate an ectopic pregnancy.

Clinical Considerations

Ectopic Pregnancy:hCG levels typically rise slower than normal.
Miscarriage:Falling hCG levels can be a sign of miscarriage.
Molar Pregnancy:Extremely high hCG levels may indicate a molar pregnancy.

 hCG Testing Methods

Qualitative hCG Test:Provides a simple yes/no answer to whether hCG is present in the blood or urine.
Quantitative hCG Test (Beta hCG):Measures the exact amount of hCG in the blood, which can give more detailed information about the pregnancy.

Sample type
Blood sample: Used for quantitative HCG testing to measure the exact level of HCG in the blood, providing more detailed information about the pregnancy.
