How to use Starlix
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Starlix is to be taken empty stomach.
How Starlix works
Starlix is an anti-diabetic medication. It increases the amount of insulin released by the pancreas which prevents blood glucose from rising very high after meals.
What if you forget to take Starlix?
If you miss a dose of Starlix, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.
Quick Tips
- It may cause dizziness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how Starlix affects you.
- It may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal.
- Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemic symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremor, and anxiety.
- Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly while you are taking this medicine.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Indication
Type 2 DM
Administration
Take immediately before or up to ½ hr before meals.
Adult Dose
Oral
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Adult: 60 or 120 mg tid.
Contraindication
Diabetic ketoacidosis; IDDM. Lactation.
Mode of Action
Nateglinide, a nonsulfonylurea hypoglycaemic agent, acts by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic ?-cells to reduce postprandial hyperglycaemia. This action depends on the amount of existing glucose levels.
Precaution
Geriatric patients, debilitated and malnourished patients; adrenal or pituitary insufficiency, moderate to severe hepatic impairment; severe renal impairment. Monitor glycaemic levels during periods of stress. Pregnancy.

Interaction
Increased levels/effects with enzyme inhibitors (e.g. fluconazole). Increased hypoglycaemic effects with salicylates, MAOIs, nonselective beta-blockers, alcohol, NSAIDs. Decreased levels/effects with enzyme inducers (e.g. rifampicin). Decreased hypoglycaemic effects with thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid products and sympathomimetic agents.
