Tanzil may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
Tanzil is unsafe to use during pregnancy as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby. However, the doctor may rarely prescribe it in some life-threatening situations if the benefits are more than the potential risks. Please consult your doctor.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Tanzil is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
CAUTION
Tanzil may cause dizziness or weakness due to low blood pressure. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Tanzil is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Tanzil is recommended.
However, inform your doctor if you have an underlying kidney disease as your creatinine levels may become high and you may need regular monitoring of kidney function tests while taking this medicine.
CAUTION
Tanzil should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Tanzil may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Dose adjustment is not recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.

How to use Tanzil
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Tanzil may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Tanzil works
Tanzil is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It relaxes the blood vessel by blocking the action of a chemical that usually makes blood vessels tighter. This lowers the blood pressure, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly to different organs and the heart to pump more efficiently.
What if you forget to take Tanzil?
If you miss a dose of Tanzil, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.
Quick Tips
- Take it at the same time every day to help you remember to take it.
- It can make you feel dizzy for the first few days. Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down for a long time.
- Your doctor may get regular tests done to monitor the level of urea, creatinine, and potassium in your blood.
- Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen along with this medicine without consulting your doctor.
- Do not take Tanzil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor.
Brief Description
Indication
Hypertension, alone or in combination w/ other antihypertensive agents.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Adult Dose
Adult: Initially 40 mg once daily. May be increased to a max of 80 mg once daily as necessary.
Elderly: No dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients
Renal Dose
Renal Impairment
No dose adjustment is required with mild-to-severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease.
Patients with moderate-to-severe renal impairment are more likely to report high serum creatinine values.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy.
Mode of Action
Angiotensin II blocker; displaces angiotensin II from AT1 receptor and may lower blood pressure by antagonizing AT1-induced vasoconstriction, aldosterone release, catecholamine release, arginine vasopressin release, water absorption, and hypertrophic responses.
May induce more complete inhibition of renin-angiotensin system compared with ACE inhibitors; does not affect response to bradykinin.
Inhibits the pressor effects of an angiotensin II infusion in a dose-related manner.
Precaution
Correct vol or salt depletion prior to administration. Renal (moderate to severe) & hepatic (severe) impairment. Pregnancy (1st trimester) & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Monitor serum K in patients taking K-sparing diuretics, salt substitutes containing K & drugs that increase K levels (eg heparin) & creatinine levels in patients w/ renal impairment & type 2 DM. Aortic or mitral valve stenosis, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
Lactation: unknown whether distributed in breast milk, decide on alternate antihypertensive therapy or do not breastfeed

Interaction
Reversibly increases serum conc & toxicity of lithium; attenuated antihypertensive effects & risk of worsening of renal function may occur w/ NSAIDs. Hyperkalemia w/ K-sparing diuretics & K supplements.
