Tekast 10 is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Tekast 10 is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
UNSAFE
Tekast 10 may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Tekast 10 is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Tekast 10 is recommended.
CAUTION
Tekast 10 should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Tekast 10 may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Limited information is available on the use of Tekast 10 in these patients. No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.

How to use Tekast 10
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Tekast 10 may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Tekast 10 works
Tekast 10 works by blocking the action of leukotriene, a chemical messenger. This reduces inflammation in the airways to prevent asthma and relieve symptoms of allergies.
What if you forget to take Tekast 10?
If you miss a dose of Tekast 10, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

- You have been prescribed Tekast 10 for asthma prevention and for the treatment of allergy symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose.
- It is a relatively safe medicine with very few side effects.
- Take Tekast 10 2 hours before exercising if you have exercise-induced asthma.
- It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. Use your rescue inhaler to control sudden difficulty in breathing.
- Do not discontinue use without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.

Adult Dose
Oral
Chronic asthma
Adult: As film-coated tab: 10 mg once daily in the evening.
Allergic rhinitis
Adult: 10 mg once daily.
Prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma
Adult: 10 mg at least 2 hr prior to exercise; do not take additional doses w/in 24 hr.
Elderly: No dosage adjustment needed.
Hepatic impairment: Mild to moderate: No dosage adjustment needed.
Child Dose
Asthma
Prophylaxis and maintenance treatment in patients aged >12 months
15 years: 10 mg (conventional tablet) PO once daily in evening
Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm
Prophylaxis
6-15 years: 5 mg (chewable tablet) PO 2 hours before exercise; do not take additional dose within 24 hours
>15 years: 10 mg PO 2 hours before exercise; do not take additional dose within 24 hours
If taking drug for another indication, do not take additional dose to prevent EIB
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
15 years: 10 mg (conventional tablet) PO once daily
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
15 years: 10 mg (conventional tablet) PO once daily
Renal Dose
Renal impairment: No dosage adjustment needed.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity.
Mode of Action
Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks the effects of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the airways.
Precaution
Not for the relief of acute bronchospasm. Not to be used as monotherapy for the prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm. Patients in whom asthma is precipitated by aspirin or other NSAIDs should continue to avoid aspirin and NSAIDs. Do not abruptly substitute for oral or inhaled corticosteroids. Be alert for any signs of Churg-Strauss syndrome. Pregnancy and lactation. Children <6 mth.
Lactation: Unknown whether agent is excreted in breast milk, use with caution

Interaction
Induced hepatic metabolism resulting to decreased plasma concentration w/ potent inducers of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes (e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampicin).
