How to use Gutfix 24 Licap
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Gutfix 24 Licap is to be taken with food.
How Gutfix 24 Licap works
Gutfix 24 Licap increases the secretion of fluids in the intestine, which in turn increases the motility of the intestine, thereby making the stool soft and easier to pass.
What if you forget to take Gutfix 24 Licap?
If you miss a dose of Gutfix 24 Licap, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.
Quick Tips
- Lubiprostone should preferably be taken with meals to reduce symptoms of nausea.
- Seek medical attention if you experience severe diarrhea, breathlessness (dyspnea) or difficulty in breathing, chest pain, tightness in chest during treatment.
- You should be thoroughly examined to confirm the absence of obstruction (e.g. gall stones, hernia, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, polyps, impacted bowel movement etc.) before starting lubiprostone treatment.
- Lubiprostone is not recommended in children under 18 years of age.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Brief Description
Indication
Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C), Chronic idiopathic constipation, Opioid-induced Constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Adult Dose
Oral
Chronic idiopathic constipation
Adult: 24 mcg bid daily.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Constipation
8 mcg twice daily.
Opioid-Induced Constipation
Treatment in patients with chronic noncancer pain
24 mcg bid daily.
Hepatic impairment
Mild: Dose adjustment not necessary
Moderate (Child-Pugh B): Chronic idiopathic or opioid-induced constipation, 16 mcg PO q12hr; irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), no dosage adjustment required
Severe (Child-Pugh C): Chronic idiopathic or opioid-induced constipation, 8 mcg PO q12hr; IBS-C, 8 mcg PO q24hr

Contraindication
History of mechanical GI obstruction.
Mode of Action
Lubiprostone is a locally acting chloride channel activator that enhances a chloride-rich intestinal fluid secretion without altering sodium and potassium concentrations in the serum. Lubiprostone acts by specifically activating ClC-2, which is a normal constituent of the apical membrane of the human intestine. By increasing intestinal fluid secretion, Lubiprostone increases motility in the intestine, thereby facilitating the passage of stool and alleviating symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic constipation.
Precaution
Safety has not been established in pregnant women. Not to be used in patients with severe diarrhoea.
Lactation: Unknown whether drug is excreted in breast milk; because lubiprostone increases fluid secretion in the intestine and intestinal motility, monitor breastfeeding infants for diarrhea
