Introduction

Ocutrop 1% is used before eye examinations and to treat an eye condition called uveitis. It acts by enlarging the pupil of the eyes and helps the doctor visualize the eye more closely. It reduces redness and swelling in the eyes after cataract surgery. Ocutrop 1% is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Refrain from touching the tip of the dropper to any surface to avoid contaminating the eye drops. Using Ocutrop 1% can make your eyes more sensitive to light. Thus, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight and other bright lights. The common side effects include burning sensation, irritation, or temporarily blurring of the vision. How to use Ocutrop 1%

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

How Ocutrop 1% works

Indication

Iridocyclitis, Production of cycloplegia

Adult Dose

Ophthalmic Production of cycloplegia Adult: Instill 1-2 drops of a 1% solution repeated after 5 minutes. An additional drop may be admin after 20-30 minutes for prolonged effect.

Child Dose

Ophthalmic Production of cycloplegia Child: Instill 1-2 drops of a 1% solution repeated after 5 minutes. An additional drop may be admin after 20-30 minutes for prolonged effect.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in persons showing hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.

Mode of Action

Tropicamide is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic which causes relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris resulting in pupillary dilatation. It also causes paralysis of the ciliary muscle leading to loss of accommodation.

Precaution

Elderly, children, pregnancy. Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, DM, cardiac disorders. To reduce systemic absorption, press on the lacrimal sac for 1-2 minutes following instillation. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities and protect eyes from bright illumination when pupils are dilated. May fail to produce adequate cycloplegia in children.

Side Effect

Transient stinging, blurred vision, photophobia and superficial punctate keratitis have been reported with the use of tropicamide. Increased intraocular pressure has been reported following the use of mydriatics. Dryness of the mouth, tachycardia, headache, allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, pallor, central nervous system disturbances and muscle rigidity have been reported with the use of tropicamide.

Interaction

May antagonise effects of ophthalmic carbachol, pilocarpine, or cholinesterase inhibitors.
