Pirocin is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

Introduction
Pirocin is an antibiotic medicine used to treat certain skin infections such as impetigo (red sores), recurring boils and others. It works by killing certain bacteria. This helps to improve your symptoms and cure the underlying infection. Pirocin is meant for external use only. How to use Pirocin
This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and gently massage the ointment.
How Pirocin works
Pirocin is an antibiotic. It kills the bacteria that cause skin infections by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins necessary for survival of bacteria. Thus, it prevents the skin infection from spreading.
Quick Tips
- Pirocin is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo.
- Clean and dry the affected area and apply the medicine at least 3 times a day. A dressing can be applied over the treated area if needed.
- Avoid getting it in the eyes, mouth or nose. Rinse with cold water if you accidentally get it in these areas.
- It can cause slight irritation at the application site. Let your doctor know if the irritation does not go away.
- Do not use for more than 10 days. Throw away any cream that is left over.
- If your skin condition does not improve within 3 to 5 days, see your doctor.

Impetigo
Adult: As 2% oint: Apply to affected area tid for 5-10 days; re-evaluate after 3-5 days if no clinical response.
Secondary skin infections
Adult: As 2% cream: Apply to affected area tid for up to 10 days; re-evaluate after 3-5 days if no clinical response.
Child Dose
Topical/Cutaneous
Impetigo
Child: >2 mth Apply to affected area tid for 5-10 days; re-evaluate after 3-5 days if no clinical response.
Secondary skin infections
Child: >3 mth Apply to affected area tid for up to 10 days; re-evaluate after 3-5 days if no clinical response.
Contraindication
This drug is contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reactions to Mupirocin or any of the components of the preparation.
Mode of Action
Mupirocin inhibits protein synthesis of the bacteria by binding to isoleucyl transfer RNA-synthetase. It is active against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria.
Precaution
Patient w/ extensive burns and wounds. Renal impairment. Childn. Pregnancy and lactation. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
Lactation: Not known if distributed into milk; recommended that nursing be temporarily discontinued during therapy
Side Effect
Burning, stinging, pruritus, pain, rash, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, cellulitis, pain or bleeding secondary to eczema, secondary wound infection, urticaria, swelling, increased exudates, contact dermatitis, furunculosis, exfoliative dermatitis.
Rarely, systemic reactions (e.g. nausea, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, ulcerative stomatitis, systemic allergic reactions).
