Introduction

Xalaprost is a medicine used to reduce pressure in the eyes in people with glaucoma and ocular hypertension (high pressure in the eye). If the pressure in your eye is too high it can damage your sight, potentially leading to blindness. It works by helping fluid flow from inside the eye into the blood. Xalaprost is suitable for adults and children and can be used by itself or in combination with other eye medicines to reduce pressure. How to use Xalaprost

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

How Xalaprost works

Xalaprost is a prostaglandin analogue. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, thereby lowering the increased eye pressure.

Quick Tips

Xalaprost helps lower high pressure in the eye and reduces the risk of vision loss.

For best results, put one drop once a day in the evening/night in the affected eye(s).

Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop.

Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution.

Remove contact lenses before using Xalaprost and allow at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them.

Xalaprost may cause brown pigmentation of the iris. This discoloration may be permanent.

Your eyelashes may become more dense and eyelid skin may darken. These changes should disappear after discontinuing Xalaprost.

Adult: As 0.005% eye drop: Instill 1 drop in affected eye once daily in every evening.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity.

Mode of Action

Latanoprost, a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2alpha, reduces the IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humour.

Precaution

Do not use within 5 min of thiomersal-containing preparations. Aphakia or pseudophakia with torn posterior lens cap or anterior chamber lenses; risk factors for cystoid macular oedema; brittle or severe asthma; history of intraocular inflammation; inflammatory, neovascular, angle-closure or congenital glaucoma; pregnancy, lactation. Remove contact lenses during use. Lactation: not known whether distributed into milk; use with caution
