Introduction
Arex-160 is an antiparasitic medication. It is used in the treatment of malaria. It is not used to prevent malaria or to treat severe malaria (where it has affected the brain, lungs or kidneys). Arex-160 should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Take it with food, preferably at a fixed time. How to use Arex-160
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not chew, crush or break it. Arex-160 is to be taken with food.
How Arex-160 works
Arex-160 is an antiparasitic medication. It works by producing harmful chemicals (free radicals) within the malarial parasite, thereby killing it.

If you miss a dose of Arex-160, please consult your doctor.
Quick Tips
- Arex-160 should be taken with food or drinks enriched with fat such as milk.
- Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
- It may cause dizziness and sleepiness. Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration.
- Do not take this medicine if you are in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
- Inform your doctor if you notice flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, muscle pains and any changes in a heartbeat.
- You may be asked for a regular blood test once a week while taking this medicine.
Brief Description
Indication
Adult(IM) 80 mg twice daily for 1 day followed by 80 mg once daily for 4 days. Maximum dose: 480 mg for 5 days.
Administration
Artemether causes QT prolongation in some patients. Thus concomitant use of erythromycin, terfenadine, procainamide, quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, bretylium, bepridil, sotalol, astemizole, probucol, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines may be avoided.
Adult Dose
Pregnancy and lactation. Avoid concomitant use of drugs known to prolong QT interval or monitor such patients.
Renal Dose
Artemether is a potent and rapidly acting blood schizontocide, which is highly efficacious in treating chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria, and complicated falciparum malaria including cerebral malaria. Its quick onset of effect and high efficacy in bringing down the parasite load are the properties which make this drug a suitable therapeutic option against falciparum infection.
Contraindication
Children (IM): 3.2 mg/kg body weight /day in 2 divided doses followed by 1.6 mg/kg/day once daily for 4 days. Maximum dose: 9.6 mg/kg for 5 days.

Pregnancy Category Note
Mild GI disturbance, dizziness, tinnitus, reduction in reticulocyte and leucocyte counts, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bradycardia, 1st-degree heart block, transient increase in serum transaminases.
Interaction
Hypersensitivity.
