Introduction

Nebanol Plus Ointment is a combination medicine. It is used to treat various types of fungal skin infections. It minimizes symptoms of skin infection such as redness, swelling, itching, etc., by acting against the infection-causing microorganisms. Nebanol Plus Ointment is only meant for external use and should be used as advised by your doctor. A thin layer of the medicine should be applied only to the affected areas of the skin with clean and dry hands. Wash your hands before and after applying the medicine. If it gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina rinse with water. It may take several days to weeks for your symptoms to improve, but you should keep using this medicine regularly. The course of the treatment should be completed to ensure better efficacy of the medicine. If your condition does not improve or gets worse, you should talk to your doctor. This is usually a safe medicine, however, it may cause burning, irritation, itching, and redness at the application site. These side effects are usually mild and self-limiting. Serious side effects are rare. You must consult the doctor if you experience any allergic reaction (rashes, itching, swelling, shortness of breath, etc.). Before taking this medicine, it is important to tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines for the same disease or other diseases. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use this medicine with proper consultation and caution. If you are a known allergic to the medicine, you must refrain from using this medicine. You should consult the doctor about prescribing an alternative medicine for your condition. During the course of the treatment, do not touch or scratch the infected skin areas as this may worsen or spread the infection.

Nebanol Plus Ointment is a combination of three antibiotics: Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B. These antibiotics work by killing the bacteria or stopping their growth on the skin. Together, they treat your skin infection effectively.

Quick Tips

  • Nebanol Plus Ointment helps treat bacterial skin infections.
  • Use it once or twice daily, or as advised by your doctor. Treatment should be continued until at least two days after the condition has resolved.
  • Do not apply it to broken skin and take care to avoid getting it in your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • It may cause temporary burning, itching or a redness at application site. This is usually mild. Consult your doctor if you experience a more severe reaction.

Mode of Action

Neomycin, an aminoglyoside with antimicrobial spectrum similar to gentamicin, binds to the 30S subunits of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and thereby disrupting DNA synthesis. It is active against many gram-negative aerobes and against some strains of staphylococci. Bacitracin, on the other hand, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis and is active against many gram-positive bacteria (e.g. staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria and clostridia) and some gram-negative species (e.g. Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae). They are often found in combinations in topical preparations as broad spectrum antibacterial agents. Polymyxin B disrupts the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane of mostly gm-ve organisms allowing leakage of intracellular constituents by binding to membrane phospholipids.

Precaution

Allergic cross-reactions may occur which could prevent the use of any or all of the following antibiotics for the treatment of future infections: kanamycin, paromomycin, streptomycin, and possibly gentamicin. Lactation: unknown if distributed in breast milk

Side Effect

>10% Allergic contact dermatitis (60%)

Pregnancy Category Note

Pregnancy Category: C Lactation: unknown if distributed in breast milk

Interaction

Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs. May enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents. Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect w/ other aminoglycosides (e.g. paromomycin), bacitracin, cisplatin, vancomycin, amphotericin B, polymyxin B, colistin and viomycin. Enhanced toxicity w/ potent diuretics (e.g. ethacrynic acid, furosemide). May impair the absorption of other drugs (e.g. phenoxymethylpenicillin, digoxin, methotrexate and some vit). May reduce the efficacy of OCs. May enhance the effect of acarbose. May enhance the effect of non-depolarising muscle relaxants. May antagonise the parasympathomimetic effect of neostigmine and pyridostigmine. May increase the risk of hypocalcaemia in patients receiving bisphosphonates. May alter INR when given w/ anticoagulants. May inactivate oral typhoid vaccine. Polymixin B: Potentially Fatal: Additive neurotoxic or nephrotoxic effect w/ bacitracin, streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, cephaloridine, paromomycin, viomycin, colistin.
