How to use Povidon

Check the label before use. Take the mouthwash in the quantity as advised by your doctor and put it in your mouth. Swish for 30 seconds to 1 minute and spit it. Do not swallow. Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 30 minutes after rinsing.

Povidon is an antiseptic medicine. When used as a mouthwash, it kills harmful microorganisms of your mouth. This is how it works to prevent and treat infections.

What if you forget to take Povidon?

If you miss a dose of Povidon, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Quick Tips

Povidon helps treat infections of the lining of the mouth and throat, such as gingivitis and mouth ulcers.

It may also be used to maintain oral hygiene before, during and after dental and oral surgery.

Gargle or rinse the mouth with Povidon for up to 30 seconds. It should not be swallowed.

Do not use for more than 14 days without talking to your doctor first.

Brief Description

Indication

Use as an antiseptic skin cleanser for major and minor surgical procedures, Skin infections, Wound infection, Decubitus ulcers, Candidal & Trichomonal vaginitis.

Adult Dose

Treatment and prophylaxis of wound infection Adult: Apply the full strength as often as required as a paint or wet soak. For minor wounds and infection apply directly to the affected area. The site may be covered with gauze or adhesive bandage. Vaginal:. Vaginal candidiasis Adult: 5 gm of (10%) gel, one applicator full every night for up tp 14 days.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity; prolonged use in patients with thyroid disorders or on lithium therapy.

Mode of Action

Povidone-iodine is an iodophore with a powerful broad-spectrum germicidal activity against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and spores. Microbicidal; oxidizes cell constituents; iodinates proteins and inactivates them.

Precaution

Pregnancy, lactation; neonates. Renal impairement.

Side Effect

Local irritation and sensitivity to skin & mucus membrane. Application to large areas of denuded skin may produce systemic effects due to iodine absorption.
