SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Droxil is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

Droxil is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.
Avoid prolonged use of Droxil, since it may have possible effects such as rash and diarrhea.
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
It is not known whether Droxil alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react.
CAUTION
Droxil should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Droxil may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

How to use Droxil
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Droxil may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
How Droxil works
Droxil is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.
Quick Tips
- Your doctor has prescribed Droxil to cure your infection and improve your symptoms.
- Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat.
- Take it with food to avoid an upset stomach.
- Discontinue Droxil and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.
- Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools.
- Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Droxil as it may cause increased side effects.

Administration
May be taken with or without food. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Adult Dose
Oral
Tonsillitis; Skin and skin structure infections; Streptococcal pharyngitis; Urinary tract infections
Adult: 1-2 g daily as a single or in 2 divided doses.
Hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustment needed.
Child Dose
Oral
Tonsillitis; Skin and skin structure infections; Streptococcal pharyngitis; Urinary tract infections
Child: >6 yr <40 kg: 30-50 mg/kg daily as a single or in 2 divided doses, up to 100 mg/kg daily.
Renal Dose
Renal impairment:
CrCl (ml/min)
26-50 0.5-1 g bid.
11-25 0.5-1 g once daily.
<10 0.5-1 g every 36 hr.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Mode of Action
Cefadroxil binds to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death. Cefadroxil is not active against Proteus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Morganella, Serratia and Listeria monocytogenes.

Impaired renal function; pregnancy and lactation.

Interaction
Concomitant use w/ bacteriostatic antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol) may cause antagonistic effect. May potentiate nephrotoxic effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics, polymyxin B, colistin or high-dose loop diuretics. May enhance the anticoagulant effect of vit K antagonists. May diminish the therapeutic effect of BCG, typhoid vaccine and Na picosulfate. May attenuate the effect of oral contraceptives. Increased serum concentration w/ probenecid. Reduced bioavailability w/ colestyramine.
