Description

The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a blood test that measures eight essential substances in your blood, including glucose, calcium, and electrolytes like sodium and potassium. It provides vital information about your metabolism, kidney function, blood sugar levels, and acid–base balance. The BMP is often used to monitor chronic conditions, evaluate symptoms like fatigue or confusion, or assess overall health before surgery or treatment.

Overview

Overview:
The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a group of 8 blood tests that assess metabolism, kidney function, blood glucose, and electrolyte/acid-base balance.

Tests Included:

  • Glucose
  • Calcium
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride
  • Bicarbonate (CO₂)
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
  • Creatinine
Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment Purpose:

  • Detects kidney disorders, diabetes, electrolyte imbalances, and acid-base abnormalities.

  • Useful in monitoring chronic conditions, drug effects, and critical illness.

Normal Ranges

Normal Ranges (may vary slightly by lab):

  • Glucose: 70–99 mg/dL (fasting)
  • Calcium: 8.5–10.5 mg/dL
  • Sodium: 135–145 mmol/L
  • Potassium: 3.5–5.0 mmol/L
  • Chloride: 98–107 mmol/L
  • Bicarbonate: 22–29 mmol/L
  • BUN: 7–20 mg/dL
  • Creatinine: 0.6–1.3 mg/dL

Interpretation

Interpretation :

  • ↑ Glucose: Diabetes, stress, infection
  • ↓ Sodium (hyponatremia): SIADH, renal failure
  • ↑ Potassium: Kidney failure, tissue damage
  • ↑ Creatinine/BUN: Renal impairment
  • ↓ Calcium: Hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency

Sample Type

Sample Type:

  • Serum or plasma from venous blood

  • Usually requires fasting (8–12 hours) for accurate glucose and calcium
