Description

It can also be the result of a hyperimmunization reaction. If the IgA blood test results are high, but other immunoglobulin testing results are normal, then this can be an indication that multiple myeloma, leukemia, or lymphoma has developed. If the IgA blood test results are low, then this can be an indication that kidney failure has occurred.

Overview

Serum IgA test measures the amount of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the blood. IgA is an antibody that plays a key role in immune defense, especially in the respiratory and gastrointestinal mucosa.

Risk assessment

Risk Assessment :

  • To evaluate immune system function

  • To investigate recurrent sinus, lung, or gastrointestinal infections

  • To help diagnose autoimmune diseases (e.g., celiac disease)

  • To assess for IgA deficiency

  • To evaluate certain blood disorders (e.g., multiple myeloma)

Ranges

Normal Range

  • Adults: 70–400 mg/dL
  • Children: 20–200 mg/dL
(Note: Reference ranges may vary slightly by laboratory.)

Test result interpretation

Interpretation:

  • High IgA: May indicate chronic infections, liver disease (cirrhosis), inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, or plasma cell disorders.

  • Low IgA: Suggests IgA deficiency, which can cause recurrent respiratory and GI infections or may be associated with celiac disease and allergic conditions.

  • Very Low or Absent IgA: Known as Selective IgA Deficiency.

Sample types

Sample Type

  • Blood sample: Collected via venipuncture (most common).
  • Other fluids: Sometimes saliva or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is used for specialized cases.
  • Report Delivery Time:

      • Usually same day to 24 hours depending on the lab.
