Exploring Reproductive Health with the Inhibin B Test
Inhibin B also appears to be a suitable serum marker for epithelial tumors of the mucinous type with about 55% to 60% having elevated inhibin B levels. In contrast, inhibin is not a very good marker in non-mucinous epithelial tumors. At best, total inhibin is elevated in 15% to 35% of non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer cases. inhibin B tumor marker tests measure these blood hormone levels to help detect a rare ovarian granulosa cell tumor.

This test measures the inhibin B level in the blood and may be used as part of an infertility evaluation. Inhibin B is made mostly by the ovaries in females, and by the testicles in males
For women:
-
- Follicular phase (beginning of menstrual cycle): 40-300 pg/mL
- Ovulation (mid-cycle): 100-500 pg/mL
- Luteal phase (post-ovulation): 50-200 pg/mL
- Postmenopausal women: 10-50 pg/mL
For men:
-
- Normal levels for inhibin B in adult men are typically between 50-200 pg/mL.
Interpretation
- Normal Range: The reference range for Inhibin B levels can vary depending on the laboratory, age, and gender of the patient. Generally:
- Women: Inhibin B levels are higher during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle and can decline during menopause.
- Men: Levels are typically stable but decrease with age and may indicate sperm production capability.
- Low Levels: Suggest reduced ovarian reserve or impaired testicular function.
- High Levels: Could point to ovarian or testicular tumors or other specific reproductive conditions.
