Enzymatic Clues to Pancreatic Health and Digestive Wellness
A lipase test, also called serum lipase, measures blood levels of lipase, an enzyme produced by the pancreas that helps the body digest fats . High levels of lipase may mean there is a problem with the pancreas such as acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

How our test process works!
The lipase test measures lipase enzyme levels in the blood, primarily to assess pancreatic health.
1. High Lipase Levels
• Acute pancreatitis (most common use)
• Chronic pancreatitis
• Gallstones, pancreatic tumors, or kidney disease
2. Low Lipase Levels
• May indicate permanent pancreatic damage.
Helps diagnose and monitor pancreatic and digestive disorders.
Acute/chronic pancreatitis, kidney disease, peptic ulcers.
Normal Range:
- Typical Reference Range: 0–160 U/L (units per liter).
- Note: Ranges may vary slightly depending on the laboratory.
Interpretation:
- Elevated Lipase:
- Strongly associated with acute pancreatitis (levels can rise 3–10 times above normal within hours and remain elevated for a few days).
- Could indicate other pancreatic or digestive tract conditions.
- Low Lipase:
- May suggest chronic pancreatic damage or cystic fibrosis, leading to reduced enzyme production.
Sample Type:
- Sample Required: Blood sample.
- Collection Method: Typically drawn from a vein in the arm (venipuncture).
