Description

A Lipid Profile (or Lipid Panel) is a blood test that measures the levels of specific lipids in your blood. Lipids are fats and fat-like substances that are important for cell function but, in high amounts, can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. The test is commonly used to assess an individual's risk of developing heart disease. Components of a Lipid Profile 1.Total Cholesterol 2.Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol 3.High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol 4.Triglycerides

Overview

A Lipid Profile test measures the levels of various fats (lipids) in the blood. It is often used to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. The test can be conducted in a fasting state (8–12 hours without food or drink except water) or non-fasting depending on the doctor's recommendation. Fasting is preferred for more accurate triglyceride levels.

Risk assessment

Abnormal lipid levels are associated with:

  • High risk: Cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, strokes.
  • Moderate risk: Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, metabolic syndrome.
  • Lifestyle factors: Smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise.
Ranges

Normal Ranges

(Fasting Reference Values)

  • Total Cholesterol: <200 mg/dL
  • LDL Cholesterol: <100 mg/dL (optimal)
  • HDL Cholesterol: >40 mg/dL (men), >50 mg/dL (women)
  • Triglycerides: <150 mg/dL
  • Cholesterol/HDL Ratio: <5:1 (lower is better)
Test result interpretation

Interpretation

  1. High Total Cholesterol and LDL: Increased risk of plaque buildup and cardiovascular disease.
  2. Low HDL: May indicate a higher risk of heart disease.
  3. High Triglycerides: Linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and pancreatitis.
  4. Normal Values: Suggest low risk of cardiovascular complications.
Sample types

Blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm (venous blood).
