Detection of LKM antibodies for autoimmune liver disease diagnosis.
The Liver Kidney Microsomes (LKM) test is a blood test used to detect LKM antibodies, which are associated with autoimmune hepatitis, particularly Type 2 autoimmune hepatitis. The presence of these antibodies suggests an autoimmune reaction against liver and kidney tissues.

Overview
The LKM (Liver-Kidney Microsomal) Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect anti-LKM antibodies, which are associated with autoimmune hepatitis type 2 (AIH-2). These antibodies target liver and kidney microsomes, leading to liver inflammation and damage.
Risk Assessment
The LKM test is primarily used to assess the risk of:
Autoimmune Hepatitis Type 2 (AIH-2) – A rare but severe liver disease.
Chronic Liver Disease – Differentiates autoimmune hepatitis from viral hepatitis or drug-induced hepatitis.
Overlap Syndromes – Helps distinguish AIH-2 from other autoimmune conditions like primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
Liver Dysfunction – Assists in diagnosing the cause of elevated liver enzymes (AST, ALT).
Normal Range
🔹 Negative: No detectable anti-LKM antibodies (Normal)
🔹 Positive: Detected at varying titers (≥1:40 considered significant).
Test Interpretation
✔ Positive Result → Presence of LKM antibodies suggests autoimmune hepatitis type 2.
✔ Negative Result → Absence of LKM antibodies; AIH-2 is unlikely.
🔎 Further Evaluation If Positive:
- Liver Function Tests (LFTs) (AST, ALT, ALP, Bilirubin)
- Other Autoantibodies (ANA, SMA, SLA/LP)
- Liver Biopsy for confirmation.
Sample Type
Sample Required: Serum (Blood sample drawn from a vein)
Processing Time: Results available within 2-5 days.
