Description

The Bile Acids Serum Test measures the levels of bile acids in the blood. Bile acids are produced by the liver to aid in digestion and fat absorption. This test helps assess liver function and diagnose conditions such as liver disease or intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).

Overview

Overview

The Bile Acids Serum Test measures the concentration of bile acids in the blood. Bile acids are produced by the liver and help digest fats. Normally, they are reabsorbed by the intestines and return to the liver, with minimal amounts entering the bloodstream. Elevated bile acid levels may indicate liver dysfunction or cholestasis (bile flow obstruction).

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

A doctor may order this test if:

  • You show signs of liver disease (e.g., jaundice, fatigue, dark urine).
  • You have cholestasis of pregnancy (a liver condition that affects bile flow and can harm the baby).
  • You have suspected bile duct obstruction (e.g., due to gallstones, tumors, or scarring).
  • Monitoring liver function in patients with known chronic liver disease (e.g., cirrhosis, hepatitis).

Normal Range

Normal Range

  • Fasting Bile Acids: <10 µmol/L (varies slightly by lab).
  • Postprandial (after eating): Slight increase is normal.

For Pregnancy Cholestasis:

  • Mild: 10-40 µmol/L
  • Moderate: 40-100 µmol/L
  • Severe: >100 µmol/L.
Interpretation

Interpretation of Results

  • Normal Levels: Indicate normal liver function and bile acid metabolism.
  • Elevated Levels: May indicate:
    • Liver dysfunction (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis).
    • Cholestasis (bile flow obstruction) (e.g., due to gallstones, pregnancy-related cholestasis).
    • Bile acid malabsorption disorders (e.g., Crohn's disease, short bowel syndrome).
Sample Type

Sample Type

  • Blood sample (Serum)
  • Collected via venipuncture (blood drawn from a vein).
  • Can be measured fasting or postprandial, depending on the clinical indication.
