Description

The Urinary Uric Acid Test is a diagnostic examination that measures the levels of uric acid in the urine. Uric acid is a waste product produced by the body when it breaks down purines, which are substances found in certain foods and beverages. This test helps in diagnosing conditions such as gout, kidney stones, and kidney disease. It is typically performed by collecting a urine sample and analyzing it in a laboratory.

Overview

The urinary uric acid test measures the concentration of uric acid in the urine, providing valuable information about the body's uric acid metabolism. Elevated urinary uric acid levels may indicate conditions such as gout, kidney stones, or certain metabolic disorders.

Risk of Assessment

The test involves minimal risks to the patient. However, improper collection or handling of the urine sample may lead to inaccurate results.

Normal Range

If the urinary uric acid level falls within the normal range (250-750 mg/24h), it suggests that the body is excreting an appropriate amount of uric acid, and there is no indication of any abnormalities related to uric acid metabolism.

Interpretation

Low Levels: If urinary uric acid levels are consistently low, it might indicate conditions like Fanconi syndrome, Wilson's disease, or certain genetic disorders affecting uric acid metabolism. However, isolated low urinary uric acid levels are less common and may not necessarily indicate a specific medical condition.

High Levels: Elevated urinary uric acid levels can occur due to various factors, including excessive dietary intake of purine-rich foods, certain medications (such as diuretics), dehydration, or underlying medical conditions such as gout, kidney stones, or certain types of kidney disease. High urinary uric acid levels may increase the risk of kidney stone formation and other related complications.

Sample Type

Fresh urine sample is required for the test.
