Introduction
Lomegen is an antibiotic, used in the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye. It relieves the symptoms of the infection by stopping the further growth of the causative microorganisms. Lomegen is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid. Avoid skipping any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. How to use Lomegen
This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.
How Lomegen works
Lomegen is an antibiotic. It treats bacterial eye infections by preventing the bacteria from dividing and repairing. It does so stopping the action of a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase.
What if you forget to take Lomegen?
If you miss a dose of Lomegen, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Quick Tips
- You have been prescribed Lomegen for the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye.
- Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
- Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the medication.
- Do not touch the tip to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contamination.
- Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution.
- It may cause short term blurring of vision when first used. Use caution before driving or using machines.
- Do not wear contact lenses until your infection clears up.
- Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the medication.

Adults
At the beginning of therapy on day 1: Instill 5 drops into the conjunctival sac within 20 minutes.
Thereafter, until day 7-9: Instill 1 drop 3 times daily into the conjunctival sac.
Otic/Aural
Otitis externa
10 drops (0.5 mL, 1.5 mg ofloxacin) instilled into the affected ear once daily for 7 days.
Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media with perforated tympanic membranes:
10 drops (0.5 mL, 1.5 mg ofloxacin) instilled into the affected ear twice daily for 14 days.
Child Dose
Ophthalmic Bacterial conjunctivitis Adults At the beginning of therapy on day 1: Instill 5 drops into the conjunctival sac within 20 minutes. Thereafter, until day 7-9: Instill 1 drop 3 times daily into the conjunctival sac. Otic/Aural Otitis externa For patients 13 years and older: 10 drops (0.5 mL, 1.5 mg ofloxacin) instilled into the affected ear once daily for 7 days. Lomefloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Lomefloxacin, quinolone or any other components of this product.
Mode of Action
Lomefloxacin promotes breakage of double-stranded DNA in susceptible organisms and inhibits DNA gyrase, which is essential in reproduction of bacterial DNA.
Precaution
Long term treatment with antibiotics may enhance development of secondary fungal infections or may support growth of non-susceptible bacteria. Contact lenses should not be worn in the presence of infectious eye diseases and the product should not be instilled while wearing contact lenses. During prolonged use, it is recommended that physicians conduct periodic examinations of the eye, including measurement of the intraocular pressure.
Side Effect
Mild, transient sensation of burning, irritation or pain may be experienced on instillation.
Interaction
Reduced bioavailability with sucralfate, antacids containing magnesium or aluminium, vitamin or mineral supplements containing iron. Increased serum levels with cimetidine. Potential increase in serum levels of ciclosporin. Renal elimination reduced with probenecid.
Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias with class IA (quinidine, procainamide) or class III (amiodarone, sotalol) antiarrhythmic agents.
