Introduction
Miltefos is an antibiotic. It is used in the treatment of kala-azar (a parasitic disease spread by the bite of infected sand flies). It inhibits the growth of the parasite and kills it, thus relieving your infection. Miltefos should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It should be taken with food, preferably at a fixed time to minimize side effects like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. How Miltefos works
Miltefosine belongs to class of drugs called antimicrobial agent. It interacts with essential proteins and chemicals which are required for growth and survival of parasite, thereby causing death.
Quick Tips
- Take Miltefos with food to avoid an upset stomach.
- Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
- It may cause dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids and Inform your doctor if you develop abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea.
- Use a reliable contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy while you are taking this medicine and for 5 months after stopping treatment.
- Your doctor may get regular blood tests done to monitor liver and kidney function during treatment with this medicine.

Brief Description
Indication
Visceral leishmaniasis, Mycosis fungoides, Skin metastases of breast cancer
Adult Dose
Adult : PO Visceral Leishmaniasis 100-150 mg/day for 28 days.
Child Dose
Child: PO 2.5 mg/kg/day bid
>12 y: 30–44 kg: 100 mg/day bid
>45 kg: 150 mg/day tid
Contraindication
Pregnancy, lactation, concurrent radiation therapy.
Mode of Action
Miltefosine is a phospholipid derivative thought to work by disrupting cell-membrane function.
Precaution
Metastases grown over breast implants. Increased serum creatinine, ALT, AST, bilirubin reported; monitor. Thrombocytopenia reported; monitor platelets
Stevens-Johnson syndrome reported; discontinue if an exfoliative or bullous rash occurs
Lactation: Unknown if distributed in human breast milk; avoid breastfeeding during therapy and for 5 months following therapy
