Description

The 1 Hour After 50gm Glucose Test (Glucose Challenge Test – GCT) measures how well the body processes sugar. The patient drinks a solution containing 50 grams of glucose, and blood is collected after one hour to check glucose levels. It helps identify women at risk of gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Note : Arogga will provide Glucose (Charge applicable)

Overview

Overview

1 Hour After 50 gm Glucose Test (also called Glucose Challenge Test – GCT) measures how efficiently the body processes sugar after consuming a 50-gram glucose solution. It is primarily used to screen for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

  • Detect early glucose intolerance or insulin resistance during pregnancy.

  • Helps identify women at risk of gestational diabetes, which can lead to complications like:

    • Fetal macrosomia (large baby)

    • Preeclampsia

    • Cesarean delivery

    • Neonatal hypoglycemia

Normal Range

Normal Range

Result (mg/dL) Interpretation
< 140 mg/dL Normal (no GDM)
140–189 mg/dL Borderline – needs confirmatory 3-hour 100 gm OGTT
≥ 190 mg/dL Suggestive of gestational diabetes

Interpretation

Interpretation

  • If glucose < 140 mg/dL → Normal glucose handling.

  • If ≥ 140 mg/dL, a confirmatory oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with 100 gm glucose is recommended.

  • High values indicate reduced glucose tolerance, suggesting possible gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Sample Type

Sample Type

  • Venous blood sample collected 1 hour after consuming 50 gm of oral glucose.

  • Fasting is not required for this test.
