Description

SSA or Ro is composed of protein antigens of 52 kDa and 60 kDa combined with cytoplasmic RNA species. SSA antibodies occur in patients with several different connective tissue diseases including Sjogren syndrome, an autoimmune disease that involves primarily the salivary and lachrymal glands (up to 90% of cases); systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (40%-60% of cases); and rheumatoid arthritis.

Overview
SSA or Ro is composed of protein antigens of 52 kDa and 60 kDa combined with cytoplasmic RNA species. SSA antibodies occur in patients with several different connective tissue diseases including Sjogren syndrome, an autoimmune disease that involves primarily the salivary and lachrymal glands (up to 90% of cases); systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (40%-60% of cases); and rheumatoid arthritis.
Risk assessment

Risk Assessment:

  • Sjögren’s Syndrome: Characterized by dry eyes, mouth, and other mucosal surfaces.
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): An autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organs, including skin, joints, kidneys, and heart.
  • Neonatal Lupus: A condition in infants whose mothers have anti-SS-A or anti-SS-B antibodies, which may cause congenital heart block.

Patients with symptoms like dry mouth, dry eyes, fatigue, joint pain, or unexplained skin rashes may be at higher risk of developing these autoimmune conditions and may require testing for these antibodies.

Ranges

Normal Range:

  • Anti-SS-A (Ro): Negative (varies depending on the laboratory, but typically < 20 U/mL).
  • Anti-SS-B (La): Negative (similar to SS-A, generally < 20 U/mL).

Note: Reference ranges may vary by the laboratory and testing method, so it's important to refer to the specific lab’s values.

Test result interpretation

Interpretation:

  • Positive Result: Suggests the presence of an autoimmune disorder, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus, or other connective tissue diseases.
  • Negative Result: Does not rule out the possibility of autoimmune diseases, but reduces the likelihood of conditions specifically linked to these antibodies.
  • Weak Positive or Low-Level Positive: May indicate a need for further investigation or monitoring over time.

Sample types

Sample Type:

  • Blood Sample: The test is typically performed on a serum sample obtained from a blood draw.
