Overview

The HbA1c test (Hemoglobin A1c) is a blood test used to assess a person’s average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. It is primarily used to diagnose and manage diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Overview:

  • HbA1c is a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to glucose. The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin in the blood that is coated with sugar.
  • The higher the blood sugar levels over time, the higher the HbA1c percentage.
Risk assessment

Risk Assessment:

  • High Risk Individuals:

    • People with obesity

    • Family history of diabetes

    • History of gestational diabetes

    • Sedentary lifestyle

    • Age > 45 years

    • Hypertension or dyslipidemia

  • Used for:

    • Diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes

    • Monitoring long-term glucose control in known diabetics

Ranges
  • Non-diabetic individuals: < 5.7%
  • Diabetic control goal: Usually < 7.0% (as per ADA guidelines)

Test result interpretation

Interpretation:

  • Below 5.7%: Normal blood sugar control.
  • 5.7%–6.4%: Increased risk of developing diabetes (prediabetes).
  • 6.5% or higher: Indicates diabetes. A higher percentage suggests poor long-term blood sugar control.

Sample types

Sample Type:

  • Blood sample is typically drawn from a vein (venipuncture) in the arm, though it can also be done using a fingerstick for some tests.
