Description

HBsAg test is a blood test that detects hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). HBsAb is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. High levels of HBsAg typically indicate an active hepatitis B virus infection. HBsAg is a part of the outer layer of a hepatitis B virus cell. The center of the cell contains the viral DNA

Overview

Overview

The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) ELISA test is used to detect the presence of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the blood. It helps diagnose acute or chronic Hepatitis B infection and is also used for screening blood donors and monitoring HBV treatment.

Risk assessment

Risk Assessment

  • High-Risk Groups for HBV infection include:
    • Healthcare workers
    • People with multiple sexual partners or unprotected sex
    • IV drug users
    • Individuals receiving blood transfusions (rare due to screening)
    • Infants born to HBV-infected mothers
    • Patients undergoing dialysis
    • Household contacts of infected individuals.
Ranges

Normal Range

  • Negative / Non-Reactive (<1.0 S/CO or IU/mL depending on assay type)
  • Positive / Reactive (>1.0 S/CO or IU/mL)
    • Different laboratories may have slightly different cutoff values, so results should be interpreted in context.
Test result interpretation

Interpretation of Results

Result Meaning Further Action
Negative (Non-reactive) No Hepatitis B virus detected No infection, but vaccination may be needed
Positive (Reactive) Active Hepatitis B infection (Acute or Chronic) Further testing (HBV DNA, ALT levels, HBeAg) required
Borderline/Indeterminate Possible low antigen presence or false positive Repeat test or confirm with HBV DNA test
  • A positive result may indicate acute infection, chronic carrier state, or recent vaccination (temporary presence).

Sample types

Sample Type

  • Blood sample (Serum or Plasma)
  • Collection Method: Venipuncture (blood drawn from a vein)
  • Storage & Transport: Typically stored at 2–8°C, if not tested immediately.
