Description

The LH/FSH Ratio Test measures the levels of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) in the blood to assess ovarian and testicular function. It is commonly used to evaluate conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), hypogonadism, and infertility.

Overview

Overview

The LH/FSH ratio test measures the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the blood to assess reproductive and hormonal function. It is primarily used to evaluate conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),infertility, primary ovarian insufficiency, and hypogonadism or testicular function

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

The LH/FSH ratio is particularly useful in assessing:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – An elevated ratio (>2:1 or >3:1) is suggestive of PCOS.
Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) – Low levels of both hormones indicate ovarian failure.
Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism – A low ratio with low LH and FSH suggests pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction.
Menopause – Increased FSH levels with a normal or low LH level indicate menopause.
Male Hypogonadism – Helps differentiate primary and secondary causes of low testosterone.

Normal Range

Normal Reference Range

Hormone Follicular Phase Ovulatory Phase Postmenopausal
LH 2–12 IU/L 8–89 IU/L 15–62 IU/L
FSH 3–10 IU/L 6–26 IU/L 20–138 IU/L

LH:FSH Ratio:Around 1:1 in normal reproductive age women

Interpretation

Interpretation of LH:FSH Ratio

LH:FSH Ratio Clinical Implication
>2:1 or >3:1 Suggestive of PCOS (not diagnostic alone)
~1:1 (normal) Normal ovulatory cycle or balanced gonadotropin secretion
<1:1 May indicate hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, or pituitary suppression

Note: LH:FSH ratio is not a stand-alone diagnostic marker. It should be interpreted with clinical features, ultrasound findings, and androgen levels in PCOS.
