The Pregnancy Profile/ANC PROFILE test is a set of blood investigations designed to assess the health status of a pregnant woman and monitor any risks to her or the fetus. It typically includes tests like Complete Blood Count (CBC), Blood Group & Rh typing, Blood Sugar, Urine Routine Examination, Serum Electrolytes, Liver and Kidney function tests, and sometimes infections screening. Overview
The ANC (Antenatal Care) Profile is a panel of blood tests conducted during pregnancy to assess the health status of both the mother and the developing fetus. It helps detect anemia, infections, blood group compatibility, and other conditions that may affect pregnancy outcomes.
Risk Assessment
-
Detects anemia which can cause fatigue and complications during delivery
-
Screens for infections like HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis that could harm mother and baby
-
Identifies blood group and Rh factor to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn
-
Monitors overall maternal health to manage risks during pregnancy
Normal Range (may vary by lab)
CBC: Hb: 12-16 g/dL, WBC: 4,000-11,000/mm³, Platelets: 150,000-450,000/mm³
Blood Group & RH: Blood groups: A, B, AB, O; Rh: Positive or Negative
HIV I & II: Negative is normal
HBsAg (ICT): Negative is normal
VDRL: Non-reactive is normal
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT – 3 Samples):
-
Fasting: < 100 mg/dL
-
1-hour: < 180 mg/dL
-
2-hour: < 140 mg/dL
TSH:
-
First Trimester: 0.1 – 2.5 mIU/L
-
Second Trimester: 0.2 – 3.0 mIU/L
-
Third Trimester: 0.3 – 3.0 mIU/L
Urine R/E: No significant protein, glucose, or infection markers
Serum β-hCG):
-
Non-pregnant women: < 5 mIU/mL
-
Postmenopausal women: < 10 mIU/mL
-
Men: < 2 mIU/mL
-
During pregnancy: levels rise rapidly and vary with gestational age (peaks around 8–11 weeks, then declines).
Interpretation
-
Normal results indicate good maternal and fetal health status
-
Abnormal hemoglobin suggests anemia, requiring supplementation or further evaluation
-
Positive infectious markers need prompt treatment to reduce transmission risk
-
Rh incompatibility requires prophylaxis to prevent fetal complications
Sample Type
- CBC, Blood Group, HIV, HBsAg, VDRL, TSH, OGTT: Blood sample (Venous)
- Urine R/E: Midstream clean-catch urine sample
