Overview
High MCV levels may indicate a condition like liver disease or a vitamin deficiency, while low MCV levels are commonly associated with iron deficiency anemia. This article explains how an MCV blood test is done, and what high and low levels in your results may mean.
Risk assessment
MCV (mean corpuscular volume) measures the average size of your red blood cells. If someone has a high MCV level, their red blood cells are larger than usual, and they have macrocytic anemia.RBC are smaller than normal and may indicate microcytic anemia.
Ranges
26-33 picograms (pg) of haemoglobin per red blood cell
Test result interpretation

Low MCV (<80 fL): Indicates smaller-than-normal red blood cells; may suggest iron deficiency or chronic disease.

Normal MCV (80-100 fL): Red blood cells are typically sized, but other tests may be needed for a complete diagnosis.

High MCV (>100 fL): Indicates larger-than-normal red blood cells; often related to B12 or folate deficiency or alcoholism.
