Risk Assessment

1.High Risk for Diabetes: Elevated glucose levels at fasting, 1 hour, 2 hours, or potentially at 4 hours indicate impaired glucose metabolism and a higher risk for developing diabetes.
2.Prediabetes: Identified by elevated fasting glucose and/or 2-hour post-glucose levels (100-125 mg/dL fasting, 140-199 mg/dL at 2 hours).
3.Normal Glucose Tolerance: Normal ranges for fasting, 1-hour, 2-hour, and 4-hour (closer to fasting level) indicate normal glucose metabolism.

Normal Ranges

Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG): 
  - Normal: <100 mg/dL
  - Prediabetes: 100-125 mg/dL
  - Diabetes: ≥126 mg/dL

- 1-Hour Post-Glucose:
  - Generally not a standard measurement for diagnosing diabetes.
  - Useful in pregnancy (oral glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes).

- 2-Hour Post-Glucose:
  - Normal: <140 mg/dL
  - Impaired Glucose Tolerance (Prediabetes): 140-199 mg/dL
  - Diabetes: ≥200 mg/dL

- 4-Hour Post-Glucose:
  - No standard diagnostic criteria for a 4-hour post-glucose measurement.
  - Typically, glucose levels should have returned closer to fasting levels if the individual has normal glucose metabolism.

 

Interpretation

1.Normal: Plasma glucose levels return to baseline or near fasting levels within 2-4 hours after ingestion of glucose.
2.Impaired Glucose Tolerance: Higher than normal glucose levels at the 2-hour mark indicate a risk for developing diabetes.
3.Diabetes: Significantly elevated glucose levels at the 2-hour mark confirm the diagnosis of diabetes.
