Overview

Muscles need creatine to function, which breaks down into creatinine as a waste product. Elevated creatinine levels in the blood indicate kidney dysfunction. Symptoms of kidney problems include fatigue, back pain, changes in urine, nausea, and swelling. The creatinine test measures blood creatinine levels to assess kidney health. High levels suggest conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, dehydration, or infection. This test is often part of kidney function or metabolic panels and may be prescribed when kidney damage is suspected, before surgery, or during routine checkups. Some medications can affect test results, so consult your doctor if you're on medication.

Risk assessment

Glomerulitis, Kidney stones, Prostate disease, Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD).

Ranges

Normal Range:

  • Men: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL
  • Women: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL

Note: Reference ranges can vary slightly based on the laboratory and methods used.

Test result interpretation

Interpretation:

  • Normal Creatinine Levels: Indicates healthy kidney function, though it doesn't rule out early kidney disease.
  • Elevated Creatinine Levels:
    • Mildly elevated: May indicate mild kidney damage or dehydration.
    • Significantly elevated: Can signal more severe kidney impairment, chronic kidney disease (CKD), or acute kidney injury (AKI).

Sample types

Sample Type:

  • Blood sample (venous blood), usually drawn from a vein in the arm.
