Description

Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This antibiotic is classified within the amphenicol group of antibiotics. It is used to treat several poultry diseases like Colibacillosis, Pneumonia, Salmonellosis, Pullorum disease,

Fowl Typhoid, Fowl Cholera etc. Florfenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria, leading to the inhibition of peptidyl transferase and thereby

preventing the transfer of amino acids to growing peptide chains and subsequent protein formation.

Indications

Florfenicol is indicated for therapeutic treatment of following gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections, caused by florfenicol sensitive micro-organisms in poultry:

• Colibacillosis • Salmonellosis • Pullorum disease

• Fowl typhoid • Fowl Cholera • Pneumonia

Dosage & Administration

Poultry: 1 ml/2 liter drinking water (20-30 mg/kg body weight) for 3-5 days. Or as directed by the registered veterinarian.

Side Effects

Florfenicol is generally well tolerated. But, a decrease in food and water consumption and transient softening of the faeces or diarrhoea may occur during the treatment period. The treated animals recover quickly and completely upon termination of treatment
