Overview

Overview:

  • Purpose: It helps diagnose allergies by detecting specific IgE antibodies to various allergens such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, foods, or molds.
  • Test Components: Typically includes a panel of allergens (environmental, food, and other substances) that may be related to the person’s symptoms.
Risk assessment

Risk Assessment:

  • Who Should Take It? Individuals with a history of allergies, recurrent asthma, hives, eczema, or unexplained allergic symptoms like sneezing, itching, or swelling.
  • Risks: Generally safe with minimal risks. Some may experience slight bruising or discomfort at the blood draw site. Results can sometimes be difficult to interpret without clinical correlation, as IgE levels can vary.
Ranges
IgE have been reported: they can range from 150 to 1,000 UI/ml; but the usually accepted upper limit is between 150 and 300 UI/ml.
Test result interpretation

Interpretation:

  • Positive Result: Indicates an allergic reaction to the specific allergen. High IgE levels suggest sensitivity to that allergen.
  • Negative Result: Suggests that there is no detectable allergy to the tested allergen, but it doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of an allergy, as some allergens may not trigger an IgE response detectable in the test.
  • Cross-Reactivity: Sometimes, a positive result might reflect reactions to allergens with similar proteins.

Sample types

Sample Type:

  • Blood Sample: Typically, a blood sample is drawn from a vein (venipuncture), which is then tested for specific IgE antibodies.
