Overview

The Creatinine Clearance (CCR) test measures how efficiently the kidneys filter creatinine from the blood and excrete it in the urine over 24 hours. It helps assess kidney function and detect possible kidney disease.

Risk Assessment

This test is often recommended for individuals with:

• Chronic kidney disease (CKD) or suspected kidney dysfunction
• Diabetes or hypertension, which can affect kidney function
• Lupus or autoimmune disorders that may lead to kidney problems
• Medication monitoring, especially drugs that affect kidney function (e.g., NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors)
• Proteinuria (excess protein in urine) or hematuria (blood in urine) detected in previous tests.

Normal Range

The normal creatinine clearance rate varies based on age, sex, and muscle mass.
Typical values for adult males (like you):

• 90–140 mL/min
• Can be slightly lower in females (80–130 mL/min)
• Values decline with age.

Interpretation of Results

1. Normal or Near-Normal Results

   • Indicates healthy kidney function.

2. Low Creatinine Clearance (Below Normal Range)

   • Suggests impaired kidney function, possibly due to:
     • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
     • Acute kidney injury
     • Dehydration
     • Heart failure
     • Obstruction in the urinary tract

3. High Creatinine Clearance (Above Normal Range)

   • Can be seen in:
     • Pregnancy (increased kidney filtration)
     • High protein diet
     • Early stages of diabetes (hyperfiltration phase)
     • Exercise or muscle breakdown

Sample Type & Collection

1. 24-Hour Urine Collection

   • Collect all urine for 24 hours in a provided container.
   • Discard the first-morning urine but note the time.
   • Store urine in a cool place (refrigerated).

2. Blood Sample (Serum Creatinine)

   • A blood test is taken alongside urine collection to calculate the creatinine clearance accurately.
