Overview

A urine pH test measures the acidity or alkalinity of urine. It helps assess kidney function, metabolic disorders, and the body's acid-base balance. The test is commonly used to monitor conditions such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and metabolic acidosis or alkalosis.

Risk Assessment

• Low pH (Acidic Urine) Risks:

  • Increased risk of uric acid and calcium oxalate kidney stones
  • May indicate metabolic or respiratory acidosis

• High pH (Alkaline Urine) Risks:

  • Increased risk of calcium phosphate or struvite stones
  • May suggest bacterial infections in the urinary tract

• Fluctuations in pH may indicate dietary changes, medication use, or underlying health conditions.

Normal Range

• Typical urine pH range: 4.5 to 8.0
• Ideal range for most healthy individuals: 5.5 to 7.0

Interpretation of Urine pH

• Acidic Urine (pH < 5.5)

  • High protein diet
  • Diabetes ketoacidosis
  • Respiratory or metabolic acidosis
  • Dehydration
  • Chronic diarrhea

• Alkaline Urine (pH > 7.5)

  • Vegetarian diet
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Respiratory or metabolic alkalosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Vomiting

• Neutral to Slightly Acidic (pH 5.5 - 7.0)

  • Normal range in most individuals.

Specimen: Fresh midstream urine sample (random or first morning urine preferred).

Collection method: Clean-catch urine sample in a sterile container.
